Croatia is a unique country famous not only for the beauty of Adriatic coast, diversity of nature and favorable climate, but also for a huge cultural and historical layer. If you like snorkeling, SUP, yachts or just the sea – go to Croatia. Mountains, national parks, trekking, rafting – go to Croatia. Walking along the old streets, with medieval architecture, visiting museums and churches –go to Croatia. And of course, gastrotourism is also here, in Croatia.
It is situated on the northwestern edge of the Balkan Peninsula in southern Europe, formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. Five countries border Croatia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia, and it shares a seaborder with Italy.
Croatia covers an area of 56,594 km², compared Croatia is slightly larger than bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina and about the same size as Ireland or the U.S. state of West Virginia. Croatia has a population of 4,2 million people (in 2015). Capital and largest city is Zagreb. Spoken language is Croatian.
The country offers a long coastline with over a thousand islands along its coast at the Adriatic Sea(which is also worth seeing),a variety of medieval towns and villages, and a pleasant Mediterranean climate. For cultural and historical holidays, go to the three major cities: Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik. For beach holidays, opt for smaller towns with a rugged coastline and dozens of pebbly beaches. They have a cozy historical center, many parking lots and trails for hiking or cycling, rental points for paddle boards and kayaks.
SPLIT, where our journey starts, is the second-largest city of Croatia, the largest city in Dalmatia and the largest city on the Croatian coast. It lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea and is spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings.
