Georgia

Georgia is famous for its warm, southern hospitality, excellent wine, and unique cuisine. Its centuries-old history is captured in majestic architectural monuments. Her cities are like romantic ballads frozen in stone. However, Georgia is mostly famous for its resorts. The mild Black Sea climate, the warm sea, the lush greenery of the subtropics, the sandy beaches and beautiful mountains – a vacation in Georgia is in no way inferior to a vacation in the popular Mediterranean destinations.

Dive into the diverse landscapes and you’ll discover the historical Georgian region is teeming with ancient architectural gems, breathtaking nature and scintillating adventure – not to mention a wine scene that even UNESCO approves of. Its rich culinary tradition is influenced by the best techniques and traditions of Europe and the East. Georgia is also a country with a rich cultural history dating back millennia ago. With stunning architectural monuments, folk traditions, songs, dances, crafts, vibrant festivals, theatre, and modern art scenes, this country is a treasure trove of cultural heritage.

Travel Information

Currency in Georgia

The official currency of Georgia is the Georgian Lari (GEL), subdivided into 100 Tetri. The term ‘Lari’ has historical roots in the Georgian language, signifying ‘hoard’ or ‘property,’ while ‘Tetri,’ meaning ‘white,’ dates back to the 6th century BC. In Georgia, the US Dollar and the Euro are the most readily exchangeable foreign currencies. Some establishments may accept these currencies directly, but often at a less favorable exchange rate.

Banking Services

Georgia’s banking sector is robust, featuring major commercial banks like the Bank of Georgia, TBC Bank, and Liberty Bank. Additionally, numerous foreign exchange bureaus are readily available, particularly in the capital city, Tbilisi. Operational hours of banks and their branches can vary.

In major cities, comprehensive banking services, including ATMs, are widely accessible. These ATMs are increasingly common throughout the country. Most hotels and restaurants accept major credit cards, but it’s important to note that smaller establishments, especially cultural sites and local art and craft outlets, may only accept cash.

For international travelers, it’s advisable to contact your local bank before your trip, to inquire about any fees or restrictions associated with using your debit or credit card in Georgia.

Drinking Water and Beverages

In Georgia, tap water is generally safe for drinking, but many locals prefer bottled water, which is readily available everywhere. Most hotels and lodges provide filtered water. Additionally, you’ll find a wide selection of bottled water in shops across the country.

Dairy and Food Safety

Dairy products, including pasteurized milk, as well as local meats, poultry, seafood, fruits, and vegetables, are considered safe for consumption in Georgia.

Georgian Cuisine

Georgian cuisine is unique yet shares some elements with the culinary traditions of the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Each region in Georgia boasts its distinct culinary style. Dining is a significant aspect of Georgian culture, reflecting the country’s status as the world’s oldest wine-producing region. In 2010, The Independent noted Georgian cuisine’s exotic appeal to its neighbor, Russia, comparing it to the allure of Indian cuisine in Britain.

Tipping Practices

In Georgian restaurants, it’s customary to leave a discretionary tip of 8 to 10% on your bill. However, be aware that many establishments automatically include a service charge.

Georgia, situated in the Caucasus region and along the Black Sea coast, is a country with remarkable geographic diversity despite its modest size, ranking 119th globally in terms of area. Among the former Soviet republics and even within Europe, Georgia stands out for its extensive mountainous terrain.

Influences on Climate

The climate in Georgia is shaped by a mix of temperate, humid influences from the west and more continental elements from the east. The Greater Caucasus Mountain range acts as a natural barrier, protecting the country from colder northern air masses. In contrast, the warm and moist air from the Black Sea significantly influences the climate, particularly in the coastal lowlands. Georgia’s climatic variation is primarily determined by two factors: proximity to the Black Sea and elevation.

Temperature and Precipitation

Across Georgia, the climate varies considerably. Average summer temperatures range from 20°C (68°F) to 24°C (75.2°F), while winter temperatures generally fall between 2°C (35.6°F) and 4°C (39.2°F). The country experiences lower humidity levels compared to many other regions, with annual rainfall averaging between 500mm (19.7 inches) and 800mm (31.5 inches).

Public Transport

In Georgia, public transportation is primarily designed to cater to the needs of the local population. It predominantly operates along major roads, connecting key population centers. This network is efficient and widely used for traveling between cities and towns.

Railroads

Historically, railroads have played a crucial role in Georgia’s economy. Although other forms of transportation, such as road and air travel, have become more prominent in moving people and goods both within the state and across the nation, railroads continue to be an important and successful mode of transport in Georgia. They offer an alternative for both passenger and freight transportation.

Airports and International Connectivity

Despite its small geographical size, Georgia boasts four international airports, strategically located in various parts of the country. These airports handle a significant volume of international traffic. Direct flights to Georgia are predominantly available from European destinations through Georgian Airways, as well as from countries in the Middle East, including Israel and the UAE, and from Turkey. These connections facilitate easy access to and from Georgia, making it an accessible destination for travelers.

Georgia experiences a climate moderately similar to cities like New York, Milan, and Kyoto, with distinct seasonal variations. Consequently, it’s advisable to pack accordingly:

  • Winter (Interior regions): Prepare for cold weather with warm clothing essentials such as sweaters, down jackets, scarves, gloves, and an umbrella.
  • Winter (Coastal regions): While milder, it’s still wise to carry warm clothing, including a jacket, along with a raincoat or umbrella.
  • Summer:Opt for light attire such as T-shirts and shorts. However, include long pants, a jacket, and a sweatshirt for cooler evenings or unexpected chilly days. Rainwear is also recommended.
  • Mountain Visits: If you plan to explore mountainous areas, pack hiking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses for protection against varying mountain climates.

Cultural Considerations in Dressing

In terms of style, Georgians traditionally have a preference for black and other dark colors, a trend more noticeable among the older generations and in rural areas. The general dress code leans towards professional and modest attire, reflecting a casual Western style. Being a secular country with a Christian majority, Georgia does not require extensive covering up. However, when visiting Orthodox Christian churches, women should cover their shoulders, and men should remove their head coverings, respecting Orthodox traditions and norms.
